I was hoping someone could help me out.  We are doing alot of file
interchange ourselves, taking a file in rtf format and converting
it into something totally different.  The problem is the files
start off in Word or WordPerfect format and need to be converted
into RTF format.  All this is of course doable, but it takes
a good deal of time.  Actually time is not a problem, if someone
could just tell the system to convert the files and leave the
system to its task.  But Word is requiring that only a few
files be open at once.  Dragging and dropping a bunch files into
Microsoft Word takes time because only so many files may be opened
at once (memory constraint).  This makes the process pretty
interactive, which is bad because it means someone has to sit there
as the system converts from WordPerfect to Word to RTF.  Macros will
not help because you are going to need someone to sit there and
issue the macro commands every minute or so (and when you are dealing
with 100 files, this can be incredibly boring for that person and
a waste of a paid employee's time).

My question is, is there anyway to have a batch conversion taking
place?  You tell it to convert 100 WordPerfect or Word files into
RTF format.  Maybe the program takes the original program name and
just tacks on a ".rtf" extension, or saves the files to another
folder (directory).  It seems someone must have written such a
program.  I'm amazed Microsoft doesn't have such a program, but
the person I talked to just suggested macros.
