Subject: Word 5.0a and the Finder--Word crashes when switching to it

We're running the latest version of system 7 on a Mac SE/30 4/80. I have
found that MS Word 5.0a crashes often. It crashes (and brings the whole
machine down with it about once every 8-10 hours (but the variability is
quite high). The crash only ever happens when I switch from another
application (including the Finder) to Word. This doesn't only happen
when I use the Finder menu; it once happened when I tried to activate
word by clicking on one of its windows. In particular, the problem
occurred twice when I was just switching from the finder to Word with no
other application running; but usually it occurs with other applications
(no doubt because I'm usually running other applications). When the
system crashes, the outline of a message box is displays and oscillates.
I've tried the following tests, with no success:

Extensions off
Automatic repagination off
Non apple control applications off
Include Formatted Text In Clipboard: off
Backround repagination: off.

I haven't tried switching virtual memory off, because I can't picture
myself working with it off for 8 hours. But maybe I should try this, and
also try switching off all control panels (yerk!).

More details:

System sofware v B-7.0.1
Finder B2-7.0
Tune-up 1.1.1 (though disk-first aid failed).
I've tried re-installing Word (plus updating with 5.0a)

I've been looking on the net for a few weeks, and haven't seen anyone
else document this problem.
