Here are the consolidated answers to the original question from David Gee
(david13@bkmain.east-london.ac.uk):

I would be very interested to hear about internationalisation failures.
There are lots of non computing tales of car names meaning various
embarasing things but I have never heard of any specific computing
     anecdotes.

Our products have gone TDC2000 to TDC3000 but we won't name the next generation
TDC4000 due to the fact that the sound of "4000" being spoken sounds like the
word used for "death" in some Chinese dialect. Our product is used for computer
aided process control; chemical plants, refineries, electric power generation,
etc.

In the early 80's Commodore produced a micro called the Personal
Electronic Transactor, or PET. I gather that the name has an
unfortunate meaning in French... I don't recall whether Commodore
marketed the PET under a different name in France...

Well it was in the early days of MS Word (I don't remeber DOS or Windows)
when the Thesaurus function created these two synonyms in the german version:

	Berufsanfanger	>>>	Berufsunfahiger
a person which is new to a job
			>>>
a person which in uncapable of working

	Frauenhaus	>>>	Freudenhaus
a place for woman to get cover, say from violent men
			>>>
				some sort of sex shop
