1993 Sun Annual Lecture in Computer Science
                    University of Manchester
                       August 24th - 25th

                  Natural Language Processing:
         Language Engineering and Cognitive Linguistics

                          Bonnie Webber
Department of Computer and Information Science
                   University of Pennsylvania

                           Martin Kay
Research Fellow at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center
and Professor of Linguistics at Stanford University

                  About the Sun Annual Lecture

The Sun Annual Lecture in Computer Science at the University of
Manchester provides an opportunity for eminent computer
scientists to give a series of lectures introducing a wider
audience to current research work in their area. The lectures
occupy about eight hours over two days, giving ample time for
questions and discussion.

This year, we are delighted to have Bonnie Webber and Martin Kay
as co-lecturers.

Registration for the lecture series is 80 pounds (40 pounds for
registered students), which includes lunch each day, and
supporting material for the lectures. The Annual Lecture dinner
will be held on the night of the 24th at Yang Sing, one of the
best Chinese restaurants in the country. If you would like to
attend this, please tick the box in the reply slip below and
include the cost with the registration payment.

                            Synopsis

Martin Kay will introduce the background and basic issues in
natural language processing, and the role of computers in the
study of language. This will be backed up with case studies from
specific applications. He will also discuss the potential of the
new wave of corpus-based statistical and connectionist work, and
of the big problems for natural language processing in general,
such as machine translation. Bonnie Webber will focus more
narrowly on the issue of Language and Behaviour. Developing her
earlier work on the structure of discourse and dialogue, she will
present recent work using natural language commands to guide
animated figures in various contexts, and discuss its
implications for our understanding of both human and computer
processing of natural language.

                       About the lecturers

Bonnie Lynn Webber is Professor of Computer and Information
Science at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia PA. She
is known for work in both computational linguistics and medical
applications of Artificial Intelligence. Her current research in
computational linguistics is at the interface between language
and behaviour, working with colleagues in computer animation on
ways of allowing people to guide the behaviour of animated human
models through Natural Language instructions. This work is
described in a recent book from Oxford University Press,
"Simulated Humans: Computer Graphics, Animation and Control" by
Badler, Phillips and Webber. Professor Webber has also co-edited
several books, including "Readings in Artificial Intelligence"
and "Readings in Natural Language Processing".

Martin Kay is Research Fellow at the Xerox Palo Alto Research
Center and Professor of Linguistics at Stanford University. He
has been a prominent figure in computational linguistics,
especially in machine translation, since the mid-1960s, and a
pioneer in the early 1980s of the now dominent paradigm of
unification-based grammar formalisms. His career includes
numerous publications, visiting professorships, and distinguished
professional activities throughout the United States and Europe.
He says:

"I call myself a computational linguist, meaning by that, one
whose aims are those of a theoretical linguist but who believes
that those aims are most likely to be met by drawing inspiration
from computer science. In other words, I hope to take from
computer science a terminology and a set of metaphors in terms of
which to explain how everyday language works. A good
computational linguist must be a good linguist who also
understands computer science in general and artificial
intelligence in particular. I am still keenly interested in
translation which I believe to be by far the best framework
within which to study linguistic problems.

I am also, in varying degrees and in decreasing order of
importance, a 'cellist, a flautist, a tenor, a cook, and a
carpenter."
