I just read this in the Solaris 2.2. Developer's Guide to
Internationalization:

  "Solaris 2.2 provides two different by incompatible methods
   of translating text.  The first and preferred method is the
   POSIX and UniForum proposed standard using the gettext()
   function.  The second method of message translating is XPG-3
   style message catalogs.  ..  The XPG message translation
   standard is not recommended and is not used in Solaris 2.2."

In all other reading I've done, it seemed that the message catalogs
were the accepted standard for handling messages on UNIX.  In the
POSIX Programmer's Guide that we have it describes message catalogs
and does not mention the UniForum proposed standard referred to
above.

Where can I learn more about the UniForum standard?  Is there any
experience that application writer's can share about either?
The application that we are developing has had a mechanism for
stripping out all messages and maintaining them separately in a
proprietary database.  We decided to drop this database and I was
planning to recommend that we use the message catalog facility
instead.  Is this a bad decision?  Any advice would be welcome.
