Japanese Windows

It looks like I may have muddied the waters a bit with my sloppy and
short email earlier on Windows Japanese version:

In Japan there are two major sets of PCs, from the Windows perspective:

1)Machines running DOS/V
2)Machines running NEC-DOS (PC9800 series machines).

Microsoft will be retailing two versions of Windows 3.1.
1)Microsoft Windows 3.1-J for DOS/V
2)Microsoft Windows 3.1-J for NEC

NEC will be retailing only the Microsoft Windows 3.1-J for NEC.

The PC9800 series machines are incompatible with the IBM clone (AT)
style machines.

An application written for the Microsoft Windows 3.1-J for DOS/V that
avoids using any machine specific code should run with no problem on
Microsoft Windows 3.-J for NEC. Device drivers, etc, will naturally be
more hardware specific. This is the strength of writing a Windows
application for Japan. There is much less of a problem with the
fractured hardware market than there was before. Not to say that there
are not SOME problems still around but they are becoming LESS of a barrier.

An additional advantage of the MS Windows 3.1 in Japanese is the
availability of Truetype fonts. This is an even bigger gain for the
japanese market than the U.S. market. Japanese developers will no
longer have to depend on WIFE technology for their fonts.

I have heard some questions on NT-J. This is not the same group as I
am in and I will refrain from commenting too much on NT. To take
advantage of the features of NT you will have to re-write some code.
Since, the operating system is fundamentally different this should be
no surprise. However, NT makes every effort to allow Windows 16 bit
code to run on NT and this is one option an ISV could take.

I hope this does not sound like a marketing hype, since I am not a
marketeer. I just wanted to clarify what seemed like some confusion
caused by my initial mail.
