Editorial

After hours of usability tests, OS/2 Computing Magazine now sports a brand
new and fresh interface. The inteface is Netscape Enhanced. As a result,
readers who are still using WebExplorer, are not in a dilemma in that the
magazine is not accessbile through WebExplorer.

The current issue of the magazine makes use of Java technology, frames and
animated gifs. There are features which are lacking in WebExplorer. We
would suggest that you download Netscape Navigator so that you may enjoy
OS/2 Computing! to its fullest.

On other matters, we have steadily seen an increasing in the readership
number. The current numbers are far from what they were in our first
issue where we could not even reach 1000 readers. Now, we are well over
10,000 in the numbers of readers. Similarly, with the addition of a
mirrors site in Poland, OS/2 Computing is now well positioned to bring you
the best reading around.

Let me take this opportunity to invite you to visit our new image and make
sure while you are visiting, jot down some comments and ideas so that we
may improve it even further for your reading enjoyment.

Happy New Year!

Commentary
===========

Thinking Person Operating System v2.00
By Tom Anderson Jr.

Well, this is the year end commentary and it will be short. Not that OS/2
cannot handle long ones <grin>.

This year has had its bad news for OS/2 and great news. We'll skip the
bad news and look only at the good stuff.

We have Merlin. It is years ahead of anything on the shelf today. You
can talk your way right thru your work. I cannot because of my old dusty
486/33 but the limits are mine not the software. And the promise of
Merlin is its power to do things today and the possibilities it possesses
for tomorrow. Of course saying these things to you, the readers of OS/2
Computing!, is like preaching to the choir. Hey, I like working an easy
crowd. And I might add the crowd is growing. It is a fact that OS/2
users are joining TeamOS/2 and sales to students will now boost the
numbers.

Coming soon will be an almost complete Lotus Suite97 for OS/2. And
StarWriter will be available too. So, if anyone ask where is the beef, we
will have it by the boat load. The Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) will
be suited very will in getting the work done under a strong robust set of
tools.

And the shareware products for OS/2 are so varied and well build that no
one should be without an OS/2 based program to do any task. And the added
bonus on shareware is that you can actually get mail back from the authors
on any problem you have. At least that has been my experience. It's that
community thing I wrote about earlier.

So, I say use shareware and register your programs. In fact, let's make a
deal. No, let's make it a New Year's Resolution. Every reader should find
a shareware they can use and register it next month. That is January
1997. I will, so join me.

And to add to the collection of good news is freeware or postcard ware.
If you have not explored those you have a treat in store.

So, in closing out 1996, I want to say Happy Holidays and may the New Year
bring each of you health, happiness and success.

Take care,

Tom Anderson, Jr.
