Single-Mode Fiber Ports Added to GIGAswitch/ATM System

HIGHLIGHTS

o New GIGAswitch/ATM linecard with two single-mode fiber ports, and two
   multi-mode fiber ports at 155 Mbits-per-second SONET/SDH (synchronous
   digital hierarchy)

o Single-mode fiber optics for distances up to 25 Km

o Multi-mode fiber optics for up to 1 Km

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The new linecard adds the capability to support two single-mode fiber
(SMF) ports, and two multi-mode fiber (MMF) ports at 155 Mbits-per-second
on a single card. These ports are all integral to the linecard; no
additional daughtercard is necessary. The SMF ports provide more choice
for connections to the GIGAswitch/ATM backbone switch and meet the
requirements for campus or telephone service provider connections.

The GIGAswitch/ATM product still supports up to 52 ports at 155
Mbits-per-second SONET/SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy). Later,
support will be extended to other media (unshielded twisted pair,
Category 5 wiring), T3, E3, and 622 Mbits-per-second SONET/SDH.

For more information about the GIGAswitch/ATM system, see the
"GIGAswitch/ATM Joins Family of High Performance Networks" article in the
December 1994 issue of Customer Update.

AVAILABILITY AND ORDERING

The new linecard is available now through Digital and its business
partners,

Order No. Description

DAGGL-AB GIGAswitch/ATM License for 2 Multi-mode
Fiber and 2 Single-mode Fiber ports

SERVICES

Digital strongly encourages users to purchase a Standard Warranty which
includes same-day onsite service (DSMC), plus unlimited 24-hour,
seven-day-per-week telephone support. Digital takes responsibility for
problem isolation and onsite repair of the GIGAswitch/ATM, all within a
matter of a few hours.

Under list warranty, a user is required to isolate problems to the
failing field replaceable unit (FRU), call Digital to receive a Return
Authorization (RA), mail the failed FRU to Digital, and install the
replacement FRU into the GIGAswitch/ATM. The overall problem resolution
time is likely to be several days. List warranty is for users who are
technically proficient with the product, require limited technical
support, and do not mind the turnaround time needed to receive a
replacement FRU.

Digital product installation services are available and cover
installation of the entire system (chassis, power supplies, line cards,
and PMDs). Installation prices are also available for options added to
the system following installation.

TECHNICAL DATA

The GIGAswitch/ATM platform has 14 slots, with one slot reserved for
management function, and the other 13 slots available for linecards. The
switch can be mounted in a standard 19-inch communications rack. Both AC
and DC power are available. Redundancy is an option. Air plenums allow
units to be "stacked" with no extra clearance. SC connectors are used.
