Embedded Wide SCSI Options for AlphaServer 8200 and 8400 Systems

HIGHLIGHTS

o Wide SCSI drives now supported as internal systems options on AlphaServer
   8200 and 8400 platforms

o Unique StorageWorks Plug-In-Unit shelves required

o 16-bit wide SCSI operation requires the use of appropriate wide drives,
   controllers, and cables

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

AlphaServer 8200 and AlphaServer 8400 5/300 systems now support (16-bit)
wide and (8-bit) narrow SCSI devices in new wide SCSI shelves. The
AlphaServer 8200 systems require the BA356-JB shelf; AlphaServer 8400
systems require the BA660-AB or BA661-AA shelves.

Wide SCSI disks can improve the performance of applications that need
very high bandwidth I/O data transfers.

AVAILABILITY AND ORDERING

The Embedded Wide SCSI options for AlphaServer 8200 and 8400 systems are
available now from Digital.

Order No. Description

BA356-JB AlphaServer 8200 Wide SCSI 48V DC 150W

BA661-AA AlphaServer 8400 Wide SCSI 48V DC 150W
             StorageWorks Plug-In Unit for DWLPA-AA/AB

TECHNICAL DATA

16-bit wide SCSI drives require wide SCSI shelves. They cannot be used in
the BA350-JB, BA655-AB, or BA658-AA narrow (8-bit) StorageWorks Plug-In
Units. To configure wide SCSI devices inside the AlphaServer 8200 system
cabinet, order the new BA356-JB wide SCSI shelf. To configure embedded
wide devices inside the AlphaServer 8400 systems enclosure, order either
the new BA660-AB or BA661-AA options for DWLPA PCI-based configurations.

Some (8-bit) narrow SCSI devices will also work in wide shelves and can
be mixed with wide devices. These narrow drives must have the recommended
minimum revision levels of firmware and will always run in 8-bit mode,
even when connected to a wide SCSI controller.

See table two of the AlphaServer Technical Bulletin for narrow device
minimum firmware revision levels. The BA350-JB, BA655-AB, and BA658-AA
narrow StorageWorks Plug-In Units will continue to be supported on
AlphaServer 8200 and 8400 systems for narrow SCSI devices.

The following table lists AlphaServer 8200 and AlphaServer 8400
systems-supported wide-SCSI disks:

o The following Wide SCSI controllers allow wide devices to operate in
   16-bit mode:
   - KFTIA
   - KZPSA
   - KZPSC
o Cables and terminators
   - Requirements depend on the platform and the controller.
