Digital Communication Server -- Available in Europe HIGHLIGHTS o Flexible and cost-effective communication server with two 64 kilobit-per-second synchronous lines, sharable among several stations o Supports all standard WANDD protocols, including HDLC, X.25, and Bisync o Programmable to support any user-specific protocol o Independent of the station's internal bus -- Ethernet attached PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The Digital Communication Server allows any station running Digital UNIX to connect to wide area networks (WANs) through two 64 kilobit-per-second lines. Based on a DEChub 90 module, the Digital Communication Server can be shared by up to 20 stations connected on the Ethernet LAN. It can either be plugged into a DEChub 90 backplane or used as a standalone device. The software supports the protocols available in the WAN Device Driver (WANDD). The Digital Communication Server supports all standard protocols available in WANDD, including X.25, HDLC, and LAP-B as lower level protocols, and DECnet or TCP/IP as upper layer protocols. It is fully compatible with any application running above the WANDD, and supports IBM Bisync protocol. An IBM 2780/3780 emulation product will also be available as an option. The Digital Communication Server also has a programmable interface that allows it to be adapted to any user's communication needs. Specific protocols can be implemented either by modifying an existing protocol or developing a new one. The Digital Communication Server communicates with host stations through Ethernet, making it independent of the station's internal bus. The application running on the station controls the communication server as if it is locally connected. The communication between the station and the communications server is handled through standard LLC2 protocol and is fully transparent, so users can pass from one station type to another without changing the protocol or modifying the application. When the Digital Communication Server is powered on, it is automatically loaded from the station that runs the software, using MOP or Bootp protocols. Network management for the Digital Communication Server is handled by Network Communication Language (NCL), where it is accessed and controlled by a set of dedicated commands. BENEFITS o Software investment protection -- Uses the Digital standard WANDD software o Hardware investment protection -- Independent of the connected stations' internal bus o Cost effective -- Sharable among up to 20 stations o Adaptable -- Can be programmed to meet any specific need AVAILABILITY AND ORDERING The Digital Communication Server is now available in Europe through Digital and its business partners. Although X.25 is available in the software provided with the Digital Communication Server, an X.25 license must be ordered if the X.25 protocol is to be used.
