StorageWorks Desktop Backup/Archiver V2.1
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
StorageWorks Desktop Backup/Archiver (DTB) V2.1 is a low-cost network
backup solution that lets users back-up and restore PC data over a
network. As average disk capacity grows, desktop information requires an
effective protection strategy to avoid disastrous loss of critical data.
V2.1 allows unattended backup of multiple PC client systems to one or
more OpenVMS VAX, Alpha, and mixed servers, allowing "lights out"
operation for MS-DOS, Windows, and Macintosh clients.
This powerful client/server backup management tool for OpenVMS-based
PATHWORKS LANs provides easy-to-use backup, restore, and archive
facilities that enable end users, system managers, and LAN administrators
to use the backup devices already resident on OpenVMS VAX and Alpha
servers more cost effectively.
Please review SPD 41.55 for complete hardware and software prerequisites,
and for the maximum number of PC clients that can be attached to each
server. In addition, please see the "StorageWorks Desktop
Backup/Archiver" article in the September 1994 issue of Customer Update
for more technical data.
BENEFITS
o Cost effective -- Operations studies show that PC LAN storage management
costs are far higher than most LAN administrators and system managers
expect. Most of the cost is hidden in both ongoing administrator support
and lost end-user productivity from accidental file deletions, rather
than disk failures. The cost-per-seat for DTB protection in a typical
PATHWORKS LAN is less than $25; substantially lower than purchasing
individual or shared tape drives and backup software.
o Protection against file loss -- Not all PC data can be placed on file
servers. Much critical information resides on laptops and notebook PCs.
Without file servers, these users need an easy method for backing up
their data. DTB provides them with a tool and protects them from disk or
file loss.
o Automated backup -- Some organizations maintain a great deal of vital
information on desktop PC disks. They need a solution that allows backup
of these disks to the centrally located storage resources, such as large
tape devices. StorageWorks Desktop Backup/Archiver V2.1 provides an
automated backup capability.
