DEC C V5.2 for OpenVMS

HIGHLIGHTS

o Allows users to take advantage of 64-bit addressing of OpenVMS operating
   system

o Provides approximately 80 additional UNIX-like functions that make it
   easier to port applications

o Includes enhancements that ensure compliance to ISO standards

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

DEC C for OpenVMS is an ANSI-compliant implementation of the C
programming language with Digital extensions. The DEC C compiler runs
under the OpenVMS operating system and generates optimized and
position-independent code. DEC C is a native-mode language product and is
integrated into the OpenVMS Common Language Environments. All OpenVMS
system services are available to programs written in DEC C.

DEC C programs can invoke, as functions, modules written in other OpenVMS
languages. DEC C supports OpenVMS Record Management Services (RMS) for
sequential file organizations and associated access methods. It also
supports stream file-access methods common among many C implementations.
DEC C provides extensive ANSI C conformance checking and supports the
lint-like features of the DEC Source Code Analyzer. It also generates
complete debug and traceback records for use with OpenVMS Debug.

DEC C V5.2 for OpenVMS is a maintenance release that enhances the
capabilities of this software product. In order to better align its
version numbers with those of the DEC C UNIX products, the new version of
DEC C for OpenVMS is being changed from V5.0 to V5.2.

Key features of this maintenance release are:

o Support for user-controlled features to specify the use of 64-bit
pointers that allow applications to exploit the increased address space
capabilities of the Alpha architecture and the OpenVMS operating system.
These features allow users to take advantage of the significant OpenVMS
   work for 64-bit addressing.

o Up to 80 additional UNIX-like functions have been added, including signal
handling, directory services, environment variables, and mapped files.
These functions are commonly used in UNIX applications and will make
porting UNIX applications to OpenVMS more straightforward.

o Additional enhancements have been made to DEC C and CRTL in the area of
TCP/IP support. Socket support and cursor support have been enhanced for
4.4BSD sockets and 4.4BSD cursors. Time-related functions have been added
so that DEC C on OpenVMS can claim POSIX-style support of the Universal
   Time Coordinates (UTC) standards.

o Enhancements to the compiler and runtime support place DEC C in
compliance with the ISO C Amendment 1, also known as "ISO/IEC
   9899:1990-1994 Programming Languages - C, Amendment 1: Integrity."
