"Prego's Cafe and Wine Bar" in Carina (Brisbane). I went there with a friend last night....... and have never been more disgusted with the service and food at any place, like I was there. Going by the Courier Mail 20 points system that they have in their Tuesday segment, I'd give it : 4 for Food, 5 for Wine, 3 for Service 4 for Ambience and 3 for Value for Money Food: We had Chiabatta with olive oil and balsamic dip for a starter. The bread was a 4" peice cut from one of those loaves you get in the plastic bag in Coles/Woolworths. The oil tasted like it came out of a plastic bottle. Mains, we ordered the woodfired pizzas. I had a Meat Lovers with BBQ sauce, my dining partner had a "Euro". Her's was quite good. Mine........ it's the first time I've seen a meat lovers pizza with spag bol mince on it, complete with the tiny chuncks of tomato and olive in it. Looks like they were using their leftovers up. The "salami" was not salami, and a couple of peices smelt quite off. The BBQ sauce, was just that. Straight out of a bottle and squirted hap- hazardly over the top of everything. There would have been two teaspoons (tops) of cheese on top. Luckily I had asked for Jalapenos on top, they gave it some taste and flavour. If that wasn't bad enough, we found a hair under the Chiabbata, and I found and even longer hair baked into my pizza. It got 4 points for food because the coffee was pretty good. Wine: They should be ashamed to call themselves a wine bar. The red selection consists of about 6 very ordinary wines. I went with a Cockatoo Ridge Shiraz, for $20. *Very* overpriced. Service: We walked in on a Monday night and there were approx 6 people in the place. We stood at the counter for 4mins waiting for a table. When the waiter finally came over I asked for one of the tables at the back that had white linen table cloths and linen napkins on. I was told No, they were only for Friday nights. We took a seat in the main area on a bare table with paper napkins. He then took another 10mins to come up and ask if we would like something!! I asked for a bottle of water. I also asked for a brief description of a couple of the dishes on the menu. He didn't quite know what they were like. (Which is why we went for the 'safe' option of wood-fired pizza). They had 6 staff members (2 cooks) to (at most) 10 customers. The times that we had top wait for service, and for the food are totally unacceptable. To top it off, my friend left some of her pizza. The waiter came over in a rush, grabbing plates and asking if we wanted coffee and dessert. She was having a bit of a think about it, and he took off. When he walked past on his way back, she asked if the pizza could be put in a container for her to take home. He looked dumbfounded and said "Oh, ummmmm, I just threw it in the bin"!! Ambience: The bare tables are well worn and very dirty. A bit of bleach, hot water and elbow grease would get them back into tip top condition. Inside was a non-smoking area. The female owner stood at the bar/counter and smoked to her hearts content. Apart from that, the background music was *Kylie Minougue*!! A tad better than the 1812 Overture that was playing when we first sat down, but not that much. Value for Money: There is a fish and chip shop right next door. Go there. I never paid for my pizza.
