SNIP OK so Telstra want to charge for local calls. The classic case of the innocent suffer for greedy. Let's look at the wider picture. Joh Bloggs at home dials up his friend and talks for an hour or so. That's ok no one worries. But then that same person rings up his ISP and holds the line up for 5 hours. Still not so bad because he eventually has to hang up and get some shut eye. But the real problems are the business people who use a POTS line for permanent or semi permanent connections. They hold the line up for days on end. Now I have no problems being charged $0.xx for a local call. But I do object to paying the same amount when the business man uses; potentially, bandwidth I would use. So you have a situation where people think that a local call is simply a local call and nothing else. Look at like this. Why should a truck pay more for rego than a sedan. And why should a bike pay even less than a sedan! If all three travel the same distance why the difference. Simply because one uses the infrastructure more than the other. The truck wears the roads more and hence pays more etc. Now in telephony we tend to think in terms of distance only. The longer your destination is the more you pay, but telecommunications infrastructure is not just distance based. It is also bandwidth based. Bandwidth is related to time when it comes to sigle space division usage. ie the line from phone to the exchange is mine to use when I like and for how long I like. No one else can use that( with the exception of RIM's) line. But the IEN is different. I should have just as much right to use these line as any one else paying the same for a local call! So hering lies the problem. IMHO I think there should be some limitation on the length of time for local calls. Lets say a limit of 2 to 3 hours per local call unit. So a 6 hour local call will still only cost local call units. BUT! at the same time recognise those calls that do not use the IEN and not impose any call limitations. PLEASE NOTE THESE VIEWS ARE MY OWN AND NOT OF THE COMPANY I WORK FOR. **************************************************************************** |-\/-| PROLOGIC Gregory P Kaloutsis |b||d| IS INCOMPLETE WITHOUT A gkalouts@powerup.com.au |-/\-| SUBWOOFER gkaloutsis@qnpbnes2.telecom.com.au ****************************************************************************
