TALK 1: "Advances in Medical Imaging"
PRESENTER: Prof. Torfinn Taxt
Torfinn Taxt was born in 1950 and is a Professor in image processing
at the University of Oslo and a Professor in biomedical imaging at the
University of Bergen, Norway. He has Ph.D. in developmental
neuroscience (1983), M.D. (1976) and M.Sc. in computer science (1978)
from the University of Oslo. He is an associate editor of IEEE
Medical Imaging and Pattern Analysis and Applications. His primary
research interests are restoration, segmentation and multi spectral
analysis applied to medical ultrasound and magnetic resonance
images. He has also published papers on image models, satellite remote
sensing, sonars and document processing. Torfinn Taxt has about 70
international publications in neuroscience, image processing and
pattern recognition.
TALK 2: "Real-tIme Fingerprint Matching and Face Recognition"
PRESENTERS: Dr Nalini K. Ratha and Dr Andrew Senior
In the modern, automated world, there is an ever growing need to
authenticate and identify individuals. The current technology of using
a PIN or password for these purposes hardly meets the requirements of
an identification system because one has to remember too many
passwords and the password or PIN is very insecure. Biometric based
authentication and identification are emerging as the most reliable
method. In this talk, we will cover basic issues in fingerprint
recognition and a very fast fingerprint matching algorithm on a
`Custom Computer'. We will also discuss how custom computing can meet
computational challenges in computer vision. we will also discuss the
current state of the art of face recognition. In particular we will
review the different types of systems currently being used, and
describe in more detail the eigenface and dynamic link architecture
approaches.
Nalini K. Ratha received B. Tech in Electrical Engineering from Indian
Institute of Technology, Kanpur and M. Tech. in Computer Science and
Engineering also from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He
received his Ph.D. in 1996 from Michigan State University Computer
Science Department's Pattern Recognition and Image Processing
Laboratory , He worked on fingerprint recognition algorithms at the
CMC R&D center, Secunderabad, India. In 1996, he joined IBM's
T.J. Watson research center to work on automated biometrics. He is
currently a member of the Exploratory Computer Vision and Pattern
Recognition group and works on fingerprint recognition and
authentication.
Andrew Senior received a BA in Electrical and Information Sciences
from Cambridge University in 1990. He received hisPh.D. in 1994 from
Cambridge University Engineering Department's Speech, Vision and
Robotics Group, with his thesis on off-line handwriting
recognition. He worked on continuous speech recognition at the LIMSI
laboratory in the Universit. de Paris Sud, and in 1994 joined IBM's
T.J. Watson research center to work on on-line handwriting
recognition. He is currently a member of the Exploratory Computer
Vision and Pattern Recognition group and works on fingerprint and face
recognition.
TALK3: "Medical Image Analysis & Simulation: a new and promising
research field"
PRESENTER: Dr. Nicholas Ayache.
The objective of this talk is to introduce the field of MedicalvImage
Analysis and Simulation. First the medical needs required to improve
diagnosis and therapy from multidimensional images will be introduced.
Then a list of the basic research issues, and a survey of the state of
the art, organized along the following categories: visualization,
segmentation, registration, morphometry, motion, and simulation, will
be presented. A brief description of a few but demonstrative
solutions, with an illustration of each of the above topic with recent
results will also be presented.
Nicholas Ayache is a Research Director at INRIA (French Research
Institute on Computer Science and Automatic Control),
Sophia-Antipolis, France, where he leads the EPIDAURE research group
on medical image analysis and robotics since 1989. He is also
teaching graduate courses on computer vision at Univ. Paris XI and
Ecole Centrale, and consulting for a number of private companies,
including currently Matra and Focus Imaging. His current research
interests are in medical image processing and analysis, shape and
motion representation, rigid and nonrigid registration, tracking and
analysis of deformable objects, image guided and simulated therapy. He
is the author or co-author of a number of research articles on these
topics, and the author of the book Artificial Vision for Mobile Robots
(MIT-Press).
TALK 4: "Automatic 3D Model Construction From Multiple Views"
PRESENTER: Dr. Chitra Dorai
The goal of this presentation is to provide a thorough introduction to
the fundamentals of three dimensional object representation and
recognition, covering the entire spectrum from image acquisition and
early processing to current representation schemes and recognition
strategies. We will also present recent research trends in sculpted
object recognition, automatic model construction, and object-based
coding (including geometry compression) for interactive video.
Dr Chitra Dorai is a Research Staff Member with the Exploratory
Computer Vision group at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center,
Yorktown Heights, NY. She received her Ph.D. in 1996 from Michigan
State University. Her research interests include digital video
analysis, computer vision, multimedia systems, pattern recognition,
computer graphics, and neural networks. She is a member of the IEEE
and the ACM.
