Title: Running Languages Other Than Java (LOTJ) on the Java Virtual Machine.
Date: Monday, 19th April 1999
Time: 12.00pm
Place: Lecture Theatre S303, Faculty of Information Technology,
Queensland University of Technology
Abstract:
---------
The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is the heart of the Java phenomenon. The
much publicised virtues of Java (write-once-run-anywhere, and runtime
safety) are actually properties of the JVM, not of Java the language.
The question thus arises as to whether LOTJs can be successfully and
efficiently run on the JVM. This is not a trivial question, as the
machine is designed to supply the raw infrastructure for Java, and little
else. There are thus a number of very interesting technical problems
which need to be solved before LOTJs can be compiled and run on the JVM.
Nevertheless, an affirmative answer to the question has been provided by
GPCP, a Component Pascal to JVM compiler which John Gough wrote in late
1998. He will describe the design issues, and their solutions in this
seminar.
