Title: Fuzzy Logic for Everyday Life

Abstract:
---------
Cheap computing devices are supporting the demand for machines that do more
and more useful work with less and less human supervision. The designer of
such machines has to build into them the capability for taking appropriate
actions in response to world situations as perceived by the machine. In the
search of methods for solving the problem it is natural to turn to the
formal logic.
Unfortunately, formal logic, particularly traditional binary logic, has been
largely irrelevant to our scientific and technical development and is mostly
nonsense for our daily experience. Its perceived relation to computing is
often trivial and frequently misinterpreted. In addition binary and discrete
logic is difficult to reconcile with the yet rudimentary ideas about the
working of the brain. Most creatures, humans included, live quite
successfully without any notion of formal logic.
Fuzzy logic as recent invention has not found much application either,
except for its application (in a somewhat modified form) to automatic
control. It seems that the modified form of fuzzy logic emerging from
control applications has the potential for a conceptual "quantum jump".
In this talk I wish to explore with the audience some alternative ideas on
automated decision making centred around fuzzy logic and search for
plausible answers to why we have been so much locked in on Aristotelian
logic for millennia. It appears that our biological limitation of having to
communicate through a sequential speech channel has much to do with it.
