Title: I/O and Locality Optimisation in an Adaptive Setting

Date: Tuesday, 19th October 1999
Time: 12pm
Place: Lecture Theatre S303, Faculty of Information Technology,
         Queensland University of Technology

Abstract:
---------
Gardens is an integrated programming language and system to support
adaptive use of workstations. In particular it enables the creation
of a virtual supercomputer from otherwise idle workstations. To utilise
idle workstations a computation must adapt to currently available machines.
Such adaptation is hidden from the programmer by the Gardens runtime system
and programming language. Until recently safe I/O and locality optimisation
were difficult to achieve in this setting. In this talk I will discuss how
I/O and locality optimisation may be *safely* achieved, and I will review
the Gardens programming language.
