Title: Security aspects of PKIs

Date: Monday, 31st July 2000
Time: 12.00pm
Place: Lecture Theatre S314 , Faculty of Information Technology,
Gardens Points Campus, Queensland University of Technology

Abstract:
---------
Several organizations are currently proposing to set up PKIs for secure
communication. However experts have different views of how this should
be done. Some propose infrastructures based on the X500/X509 standard and
use a hierarchical architecture while others use an unstructured approach
such as that of PGP with minimal connectivity. There are also experts
who argue that PKIs cannot be made secure and that therefore it may be
better not to use them at all.

In this talk we will first discuss the trust requirements for such
structures. We will then consider several atrchitectuers which can be
employed. We will consider hierarchical structures, horizontal structures,
and combinations of these. Our goal is to design PKIs which are,
ROBUST, that is, withstand Byzantine faults which are not predictable.
SURVIVABLE, that is, withstand the destruction of large parts of the
             infrastructure.
Another desirable property is SCALABILITY.
