Where can you get a good deal on blank audio cassettes (C90 high bias type,
box of 10) in Ottawa? Traditionally the best deals can be had in discount
stores, not in the neighbourhood stereo store. My favourite brand (5 years
ago) used to be Maxell XL2S. I haven't stumbled on the right discount
store in Ottawa yet.

I think have found it for video cassettes. Almost any good brand T120 VHS for
$3.49 (quantity 1) at the discount store 1/2 block north of Laurier on Bank
downtown. But no good audio tape selection there.

markus@pinetree.org <-- NOT 'mwandel@bnr.ca', that does not work.

For Audio Cassettes I go to the Sony Store (third floor Rideau Center). The
Sony UX 60's and 90's make an excellent tape. The price for a 60 is
1.99 for 1 or 17.90 a box of 10. The 90's are 2.49 each or 22.90 for 10.
I have used the Maxell XLII's and they yield about the same quality.
If I had to choose one over the other I would choose the Sony tapes. They
have a new line that is just up from the UX's that are made for CD recordings
are are about $2 more.

For video's back at the Sony store again. They have the Sony ED 120's for
2.99 each which make excellent tapes for repeated recording. I don't know
the box price.

Funny what you can find out there.

When i use to buy audio tapes, i noticed that the prices in Toronto
were about the same as those in Ottawa. This was strange given that
everything else was more expensive up here in the Winter Wonderland.

It turned out that we in Ottawa were getting scammed. Though the
price of a box of tapes is the same as those in Toronto, the size
is NOT! In Toronto, there are 12 tapes to a box. In Ottawa there are
only 10. If you see a box of 12, it has a higher price.

Caveat Emptor! Buy tapes the next time you go to a big city like
Toronto or Montreal. Competition sets the price!

Another scam in Ottawa is the pricing fixing on ski equipment ie:
Tommy Levebre along with Olympic!

..or for the undecerning try the Dollar Store, Bayshore.

Sony HF 60's for (you guessed it) $1.00
10 for $10, 12 for $12, etc.

With good equipment (Dolby XXX) and proper record level you get
_good enough_ recordings.
