ADO locate record gives Multi-Step Operation Generated Errors

I am trying to see if a record already exists.  Here is the code I am
using, any help would be appreciated.  It gives the error stated in
the subject.  The error occurs after the Locate statement.

    if(ADOTab->Active == true)
       ADOTab->Active = false;



    ADOTab->CursorLocation = clUseClient;
    ADOTab->TableDirect = true;
    ADOTab->TableName = "Auctions";

    ADOTabAuctions->Active = true;

    TLocateOptions Opts;

    Opts.Clear();

   if(ADOTab->Locate("ItemNo", Variant(edtItemNo->Text), Opts)){}
