Interaction of CursorLocation, CursorType and prepared properties with ADO TADODataSet

Can anyone clarify the interaction of CursorLocation, Cursortype and
the 'prepared' properties for me?

I have a TADODataSet connected to a DBGrid.
CommandType = cmdText
CursorLocation = useServer
CursorType = ctStatic
prepared = false
CommandText = select distinct ACCRUNCODE, ACCRUNDATE, DESCRIPTION from
ACCOUNTRUN

The SQL appears to work fine when run through Microsoft's Query
Analyzer, but I have mixed success when trying to set the dataset to
active in the IDE. Cycling through various combinations of the three
properties in question I either get the ever helpful 'Errors
occurred', or 'the required properties cannot be supported' or
(occasionally) 'does not support bookmarks which are required for
multi-record operations' or (even more occasionally(or is it less
occasionally?)) the bloody thing works! I have run across similar
problems in the past and managed to bumble my neophyte way around
them, but I would dearly love to know what was actually going on.

Anticipatory thanks
Peter
