Donald,

it's quite easy;)) You may use two approaches. As a first of them, since you
mention BDE, I'd say that BDE may work only through ODBC or Borland native
drivers.
If you'd like to use ODBC you must create (preferably system) DSN alias
through Control Panel|Data Sources applet. Then start BDE Admin, create new
alias for your ODBC Informix driver and type/select your previously created
DSN name into ODBC DSN field. Save changes to the alias and test it.
If you'd like to use native BDE driver, then you must create new alias in
BDE Admin for INFORMIX driver, set its DATABASE NAME field to the name of
desired database and SERVER NAME field to the name of Informix server your
database resides on (usually like ol_<NT-box name>). Save changes to the
alias and test it.

After either of the steps above, you may use SQL Explorer, for example, to
connect to the newly created alias, open database and explore it.

As you wrote to the .ado group, you may also use ADO connection to connect
to the desired database. Connection string will look something like:
for OLEDB ODBC Provider:
"Provider=MSDASQL.1;Persist Security Info=False;User
ID=informix;Password=<password>;Data Source=<ODBC DSN name>"

for Informix OLEDB Provider:
"Provider=Ifxoledbc.2;Persist Security Info=False;User
ID=informix;Password=<password>;DataSource=<database name>@ol_<server name>"

HTH,
      Alexei

with C++. I have all of the Informix drivers on my client machine (and they
work for other applications). I can use "ilogin" to test the drivers.
However, I cannot define an alias in the BDE tool. I'd appreciate any help
you folks might be able to give.
