Hi, Richard!

Client / server DBMS have their own specific architecture and access
methods. In other words, a Syquest server cannot access an Oracle
database, or vice versa.

Property set up, your program can access your tables through any DBMS
from dBase to Oracle. That uses the BDE as the abstraction layer, and
will require you to have a configuration to load your datamodule tables
/ queries with the appropriate DBMS-peculiar table names (for instance,
dBase needs the extension, SQL Server prefixes table names with dbo.,
etc.). But other than that, and using a reasonably constrained set of
field tables common to all, you should have no trouble retargeting your
app to another DBMS by simply redirecting the alias to the appropriate
driver and database.

If you must make available your data to other programs, your best bet is
to write a DLL, COM object, or CORBA object which they can call upon,
and with which you can hide your DBMS from them.

I hope this gives you something useful to think about.
