Really basic questions

Hello,

Although I have created a lot of single-workstation databases, what I know
about multi-tier databases can be written on a postcard. So, here are my
questions.

We have a database that we access directly with the BDE. We figured that
when we deploy it we might substitute TurboPower's FlashFiler, but hadn't
decided.

Anyway, it turns out that various users will want to be accessing (read and
write) the database from their big-deal database servers; some use Oracle,
some Maximo, some other that I haven't heard of. Also, some use microsoft
ODBC. Question 1: do we have to worry about conflicts because different
servers are trying to get at the data at the same time? Question 2: if we
set up a simple client-server architecture with BDE, Interbase, or
FlashFiler, does the Big Deal server have to go through FlashFiler to get at
the data, and is that hard for them to do? Question 3: is Interbase the
best bet, do you think?

It may also be that the clients will want to grab the data, put it in their
"official" database, and then have our program (a number-cruncher) get the
info from there, whereever "there" is. Question 4: So ... what would I, a
lowly workstation programmer, need to do so that my program can get at that
data?

Thanks much,
Richard Ulrich
