Hi, Manuel!

The answer to your question depends on the technology you use. In CORBA,
you can use several threading models, ranging from a separate servant
for each request through thread pooled multithreaded single servants, to
replicated multithreaded servants. In MTS you have several threading
models - single, apartment, and free. Remote data modules can be either
a CORBA servant or an MTS object. And, of course, you can implement your
own communication method and threading method by basing invocation on
named pipes, sockets, or http. Or you can offer your service from a
webserver with one of the CGI options.

Take your pick...

My guess is that your problem with the Active DLL stems from the need
for the DLL to execute in a process context, and, since you are invoking
it remotely, the proxy on the server side creates an .exe to host the
.dll without checking to see if one already exists. MTS may be a
solution to this, if you really want to use the MS technology. My
personal preference though is for CORBA, partly since it offers thread
pooling, which is not available for MTS, but also because it seems to
have a cleaner, simpler, and more object oriented model.
