INTERBASE TABLES question

In an INTERBASE table I cannot have an autoincrement field so I have to
manualy maintain it in another table.
But if I do write

int myIndex = myTable->FieldByName( "INDEX_COUNTER" )->AsInteger ++;

is there a chance that both CGI applications after some user requests
access the table and read the same value.
I am wondering is it safe and the one CGI-app will wait till the other
has finished its table field update;
If there's a betetr way can you explain it ???
