Use queries or tables for lookup datasets?

Hello all again,

Which type of dataset (query or table) is more efficient for using as a
lookup dataset in the client piece of a multi-tier app? For small sets
of data, I can cache the lookups, but for large sets this is obviously
not a reasonable approach. Any experience you wish to share would be
appreciated.
