Hi, Usually if all you want is multiuser access to the database, you should employ a 2 tier or Client/Server setup which is possible even the way you do today since Access can be placed on a central file server and be reached from multiple clients. However since Access is a flatfile database without any standalone database server process (its embedded in each client), this setup is prone to problems when a client abruptly shuts down due to a power failure, network problems etc. To solve that problem, there are two ways to go: 1) Choose another database, MSSQL/2K in your case to make transition simpler, which _does_ have its own database server process and thus can be placed on a central machine then operating as a database server. The benefit of this is that clients having network problems or abruptly shutting down wont affect the integrity of the datastructures on disk on the database server. 2) If you want to continue using Access, you can look at your own idea of n-tier... namely 3-tier which in reality is working as a 2-tier solution. What you would build is an application server through which your clients will access the Access flatfile database. That means that only one process on one machine will ever try to modify the data directly in the database and that gives the same benefits as the MSSQL/2K (or other standalone database) suggestion. Check out kbmMW at www.components4developers.com (when our site is back up... ISP have some technical problems at the moment) for a solution which will enable you to do this. -- best regards Kim Madsen kbm@components4developers.com www.components4developers.com The best components for the best developers kbmMW - kbmMemTable - kbmWABD - kbmX10 "Daniel" <daniel@invarions.com> skrev i en meddelelse news:3f4c404f@newsgroups.borland.com... > I have currently developed a single-tier DB application, using MS Access DB. > I am looking to moving the application into a multi-tier application so that > we can have multiple users accessing the database simultaneously. > > What would I need to do (ie. what components should I use, and what database > to use) in order have multiple users accessing the database simultaneously > over a network? > > Thanks Daniel > >
