Sending a database over the internet

I have an application that creates and modifies a database (*.dbf) quite
well. I'd like to send the application and updated databases to
unskilled users over the internet. What's the best way to compress and
send such data?

Please point me in the direction of any reading material, examples, or a
better group to post this question to.

Thank you.
