Hi, Steven! The whole point of multi-tier is to push business logic into the middle tier from the database server tier. This provides a higher level of DBMS independence and greater scalability. Generally you have n clients, n middle-tier machines and a single database server (you can leverage replication or SAN if you need higher reliability in the DB server). I hope this helps.
