I am looking into replacing the BDE using the Core Labs ODAC, which
appears to have the functionality that I need.  I am using BCB5.
However, I have found the documentation to be almost as weak as
Borland's, and the demos don't show any really complex operations
(there is only one for BCB5; I can work in Delphi, but I'm not very
proficient), so I have some questions regarding a few of the
components.

Also, I have not found any discussion groups on UseNet in which ODAC
is discussed (anybody know of a mailing list?).

I did not see any straightforward way to add or access calculated
fields in a TOraTable.  What am I missing?  This is not a
show-stopper; it would appear that I can just use TOraQuery instead.

There are two versions of query component.  Under what circumstances
should I use TOraQuery versus TSmartQuery?  It seems to me that they
both have roughly the same functionality, but the 'smart' query does
its own update/delete/insert SQL.  Is that the only difference?

There does not seem to be any difference at all between TDataSource
and OraDataSource.  Is that true?

I gather that you need a ConnectDialog, and it needs to be referenced
from the OraSession, but I am unclear on why.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.  TIA
