I am not sure about the MS-Access limits (and they probably vary by Access version), but it sounds like you have exceeded the maximum length of an index. I encountered this problem on an SQL Server a while back when I tried to add a 255 byte text field to a key on a table... Each database format/engine has its own limitations on what are acceptable, and it sounds like you found one limitation where MS-Access is less flexible than Paradox...
