How to Create a Distributable Application

I just started using Borland Builder 6.0. I have the personal edition. I can't distribute any software under my current license. I would have to upgrade to the PRO version at a minimum to do so.

I am interested in learning how one goes about creating a setup file for Windows, and how one creates a setup file in such a manner so as to provide some protection against software piracy. If this requires a special purchase of third party software, I need to be able to establish the cost to evaluate whether it is worth my while to make such an investment. My immediate goal is an educational software environment, which means students with little cash and lots of know-how, as well as some possible perception of becoming a campus hero if they break the piracy protection on a piece of software.

I don't perceive a web site as a practical option to register the software given the cost for a site and the time or dollars spent on the code for the site. My experience with educational software distributed with books is that it tends to not have much if any piracy protection. I don't care for that approach.

Is there a low cost means of creating a setup file that will not cause a lot of installation headaches that are OS dependent and that can provide some realistic measure of piracy protection? I don't want the software to show up under someone's anonymous site as freeware on the web.

Thanks in advance for the advice.
