By using the Multi-byte Character Set (MBCS). Unlike Unicode (also called a double-byte character set), where every character is two bytes, in the MBCS, some characters are one byte, and some are two bytes. The VCL uses the MBCS internally, so you can still support other languages, it's just not as easy as using Unicode. In fact, I am having trouble getting AnsiString to load a multi-byte character from a resource. I just get lots of question marks, and it is very frustrating. I wish Borland would just bite the bullet and convert VCL to Unicode, and to hell with Windows 95/98.
