A TCP Server listening to a "real world" address

I have written a TCP Server using the Indy TIdTCPServer control. I allow
the address and the port to be set at run time.

The server must listen on an address and port for messages sent by a GPS
device. I have written a client to simulate the device.

The server works fine if the client is on the same network. But if I try to
go over the internet the server and the client do not connect. The client
gets a timeout error. I am clearly missing something in my understanding of
how to listen to TCP over the itnernet.

I am currently running on Windows XP. I am connecting to the internet via a
cable modem.

The address I use is obtained via the ipconfig command. The address can be
pinged from a machine at my work. However, the client cannot contact the
server from that same machine. As I said, I think there is a gap in my
understanding of how to use TCP/IP over the internet. Things work correctly
via intranet. Can anyone explain to me what is going on - and/or point me
to some reference material so that I can learn more about this?

Thanks!
