I said that for using those programs it was irrelevant to have a permanent connection to an ISP or using dial-up. During the communication between the central server and a client there is a persistent connection. Ok. Nice. I never said that it was not. I only stated that one does not have to let run those programs permanently, let alone the computer, in order to use those programs now and then. Please reread my posts for that. >>And my thoughts were to much with Napster I think. > > Napster also worked in the same way - persistent connections to a central > server, and negotiated direct-transfer connections between individual users. Back in 2000, it was I think, I used Napster for some weekends. I remember that Napster presented many clients that were not 'in the air' when trying to use them. But yes. Most people used dial-up then. I had fogotten the name Napster so looked in my first laptop (pentium 100 Mhz). There it was. It would not connect ;-) but there were mp3's. Now it plays Beethoven, Bob Marley, Leonard Cohen and Mozart. Great! This newsgroup brings so much joy :-). Hans.
