It is just a matter of which IP address(es) you connect to, and whether you need routers/gateways installed in between to reach it/them. Gambit

Interesting...Interesting indeed! Is there any "Public" server i can use for a test?...I mean to test my code before I set up my own server? and what about the authentication issues? doesn't one need to identify ones self before getting access to an internet server?

No. You have to set up your own server for that, since only you know how your chat protocol works. > and what about the authentication issues? You have to implement that in your communication protocol. Your clients have to identify themselves when connecting to your server. Gambit

Another thing is the architecture of the application 1. Pier to Pier - This is where you connect directly to the other party's computer. One of you will need to open up some ports (or one port) for the traffic to travel . Open up means that allow to receive incoming TCP/IP connections. This means that one is the client and the other the server. CLIENT ->---------------->- CLIENT (listen mode) 2. Through a Central Server. This is where a central server is sitting on the internet and is wait for connections. Once a connection comes in it will be registered as one in a chat session or chat room. Then another connects to the server and registers as well and then the both parties chat though the central server. The advantage is that the clients do not have to have TCP/IP ports opened up. The disadvantage is that it is more complex. Matter of fact this architecture is how most chat servers do their thing even yahoo chat, msn, etc.. CLIENT ->------------>- SERVER -<-----------<- CLIENT Zahir Saleh wrote: > Hello! > I need to develope an application so that i can chat over the internet.
