Information on sockets please
#5551

Hi all,

I am about to write a client/server app and would like to use sockets to
facilitate communication between them, I have heard a rumour, that may be
untrue that they are unreliable and cause more problems than they solve.
Could anyone please clarify the following:

Are sockets reliable?

Should I use Borland's implementation of the socket or should I create them
directly myself ?

What should I be most aware of before I start using sockets ?

Many thanks

Joe

Yes, when used properly.

That is your choice. Borland's implementation works, as long as you use it
properly. Or there are plenty of third-party implementations that are good
as well. It all depends on what exactly you plan on doing with the sockets
and what kind of operations you indend to perform on them - whether you want
to write them manually or to find an implementation that already supports
them.
