In the case of dialup, you could use the RAS API to see if there are any
dialup connections configured in DUN, and also to see if any dialup
connections are currently active. That won't tell you if the connections
are used for internet access, though.

As for the rest, you can't discover the type. Internet connections are just
another type of network connection, regardless of the type of hardware being
used. Especially where DSL and Cable are concerned, once configured they
are transparant to the computer. You will just have to ask the user what is
actually being used.

Then you can't do programmably what you are asking for, because the computer
itself doesn't even know whether DSL or cable is being used.

No, because there are a ton of different modem manufacturers. Do you really
want to try supporting every modem type that exists in the world? Besides,
there is also another scenerio where no modem is being used at all because
the computer is getting its internet connection via a local network instead
and thus the modem is connected to a completely different machine
altogether.

Why do you need this? If anything, just ask the user what he/she is
actually using. You will save yourself a lot of troubles, and your program
will be that much more flexible in the long run should the user ever change
the connection type to something else later.

DIalup would be checking the DUP through API, and you could check if
DHCP was used, it would be Cablemodem (most of them uses DHCP), and DSL
would be like DUP... win2000 and xp manages it on the same way.
