>Still, I think it is an excelent idea to get to know asm, if only so >you can understand how the compiler is misinterpreting what you meant >to tell it to do. Seconded and thirded! Furthermore, while not as critical as it once was, learning several different assembly languages (e.g., x86, 68k, some 8 bit things (e.g., 8051, 68xx, 6502)) can help broaden one's view. Just like learning several HLLs can; while C is Turing complete, APL or LISP or SmallTalk or any of several other languages which are also Turing complete do things differently. Then there are things that are specialized, some Turing complete and some not, such as AWK, Snobol, Tc/Tkl, scripting things, etc. The more different ways of looking at something you learn, the more likely you are to choose one that fits the problem rather than forcing your solution to fit what you know. Kevin (who started on IBM 360's, CDC-6400 and PDP-8 back in the mid '60's; then: Fortran, COBOL, Algol, assembler (all three) and PL/I; now: mostly DOS & Win32 using F77 with C and x86 asm; in between: lots of other things)
