Hi everyone, i'd want to convert my project from BCB5(pack 1) to BCB 6. Which type of operations I must have to do? Thanks in advanced. Matt

In theory you should just open the project in the new IDE and it should be updated automatically. In practice, that does not work so well for anything but the simplest projects. The usual advice is to create a new project (group) and add all the files/libraries to it as before. Doing this through the IDE seems to resolve a lot of the odd issues that might show up. Issues to be aware of are: Some VCL code moved files. The core libraries were reorganised a little to reduced dependencies and provide a common foundation for CLX, 'the VCL for Linux'. You might find you need to update some headers, or forward declarations if you use them. The default STL is supplied by STLport rather than Rogue Wave. If you have made some assumptions that were true with Rouge Wave, but not STLport, you might have some more issues - again, usually header related by assuming standard header X will always include standard header Y. The awkward one is if you use any 3rd party VCL components. Ideally the component vendors will support you with BCB6 versions. Failing that, if you have the source, you can compile a BCB6-compatible version yourself. Remember, after installing the IDE you will have to install any 3rd party design time packages into it again. If your project is any size there will definitely be some work involved, but it is quite managable. I upgraded our own projects singlehanded (over 1,000,000 lines of code and several thousand source file, ~200 projects) over a period of 3 weeks. In this time I also totally restructured the directory tree and build system (it seemed like a good time!) and ported the Orpheus components we used as TurboPowel withdrew from the business we week I started porting! The majority of my time was spent refactoring the build system, and then working on Orpheus. I don't really remember devoting much time to BCB upgrade issues at all (but then, I was building new projects anyway, with the build system work) Remember to download and install the patches as well. Patch 4 is quite important if you are building large projects, although BCB5 has the same problem it fixes so I guess it is not an isse for you yet ;?) AlisdairM(TeamB)

In addintion to what Alisdair Meredith [TeamB] already told you, this is one little tip: After successful porting lots of BCB5 projects, I simply couldn't port one particular project, because linker always complained on some 'references'. The problem was the *file name*, which I named 'report.h/cpp'! BCB6 linker just didn't like it! The solution was simple - give it another name. In these newsgroups I remember one more post that was addressing the same problem. Everyone suggested to look this or that, but the solution was just to change the file name. -- Best regards, Vladimir Stefanovic "Matt" <lpaul@NoMail.com> wrote in message news:41e3adc5$1@newsgroups.borland.com... > > Hi everyone, > i'd want to convert my project from BCB5(pack 1) to BCB 6. > Which type of operations I must have to do? > > Thanks in advanced. > Matt
