TMediaPlayer never working for AVI

I used to have Win98se and it worked, now I have WinXPsp2 and it never 
seems to work.

mediaplayer_controller->FileName = "test.avi";
mediaplayer_controller->Open();

gives "The MCI device you are using does not support the specified 
command"

I have tried setting DeviceType=dtAutoSelect and dtAVIVideo too.

MCIWndNew(m_hMCIWnd, "avivideo")
gives the exact same message in a popup message board.

I need some way to universally play a basic AVI file into a Window 
handle I specify, and make it compatible with everything starting from 
Win98se. What is my possible problem and is the "ActiveMovie" ActiveX 
control universal since Win98se?
