EMCIDeviceError...MMSYSTEM296 - Midi file corrupt

I have a 257===TMediaPlayer::Error problem .

First funny thing is that  -12===TMediaPlayer::Mode  !
Well, bcb4vcl.hlp implies 0 thru 6 .
But we can live with that .

Second funny thing (and apparently my real problem)
is that , after the error , it seems TMediaPlayer::OnNotify
gets triggered again and again and again ..... ?
Resulting in the cascading "No MCI device open" messageboxes ?

Perhaps I need (MPlayer->Notify = false) more places ?
