Changed the code to:

   bool MyFileExists3(const char *fname)
     {
     DWORD a = GetFileAttributes(fname);

     if ( a == 0xFFFFFFFF ) return false;

     return !(a & FILE_ATTRIBUTE_DIRECTORY);
     }
