In many cases, the OS will use your application's
main thread for IO completion: read/write, send/receive...
Make sure all asynchronous calls are completed before
you exit (or canceled if you are time-limited on exit:
emergency shut-off).  Keep in mind:

Each time Windows calls a completion routine, it uses
some of the application's stack. If the completion routine
does additional asynchronous I/O and alertable waits,
the stack may grow.
"
