My advice is to find out which chars are really allowed and
make a conversion table for all chars:

char ConvertToWin98[256];

where you map 'A' to 'A', 'B' to 'B', but '' to 'A' and '' to
'D'. Then you get AllowedChar = ConvertToWin98[NamesChar];

Better even, map it to a std::string to be able to convert one
char into two or even delete chars:

std::string ConvertToWin98[256];

and map '' to 'E' and '' to 'AE' and non-printables to ''.
