I do not know if it works in earlier versions of IE. I don't know of
anyone who runs such old versions. If you have a sacrificial machine
or are running VmWare or Virtual PC then you might want to just
install an old version of IE and try it:
  http://browsers.evolt.org/

I have not tried to get IE to tell me its version. My main idea of
how to work with IE is by using a powerful HTML editor, notepad. (for
example: http://www.mulroy.org/programg.htm).

I looked around and found this site which speaks of how to determine
the IE version from registry entries:
http://balasainet.com/iesupersite/faqs/ieversion.htm

This site presents some Delhi code which purports to do it (although
at first glance it does not seem to be do what the other site claims
is needed for versions <5):
http://www13.brinkster.com/vincenzog/printart.asp?idart=16

Since Microsoft gives IE out for free and IE 5 is already years old,
someone running IE version 4 or before has bigger problems than if
your software will work. You might want to show them how to replace
their 8-track with a CD Player and introduce them to new-fangled stuff
like cell phones. <g>

By the way, if any of them are missing then when it starts IE will
always recreate index.dat and history files. What you are doing with
the code is deleting the information contained in them and the
re-creation is not going to re-create the information. The only sure
way I know of delete the index.dat files is by rebooting to DOS and
killing them.

I have a "quicky" utility that I threw together because I clean my
cache a lot and was getting tired of manually picking through the
cookies to keep those I want and kill those I didn't. While I did not
champion it as "production code" it seems to work. I've made a zip
file of it and am aiming it at your email box. It's a 7K zip file
renamed to have a .zx extension so that AOL won't freak thining it's
one of those evil zip files that people who actually know how the
Internet works use <g>
