Well, then, maybe my crack about hacking into ShellExecuteEx to see

Your school might be able to get the source for it from MS?
Knowing how ShellExecuteEx processes files before calling
CreateProcess should solve most of your problems with this part.

You, your Prof or your Dean should contact MS and see what can be
done.  If the procurement process turns out not to be too painfull, it
would be a lot easier than thrashing about.  Heck, they might just
tell you how it's done instead of giving you the code.
