Notifications about network file system changes

Hi,

I have to observe creation and changes of files in specific
directories throughout a small network. The computers to
observe run Win98/2000/XP.

Locally I used SHChangeNotifyRegister() to observe one
directory. I think this also works locally on a Win98 system
but the function is not documented for Win98 and one has to use
GetProcAddress() etc.

My questions:

What options do I have to implement this?

Can SHChangeNotifyRegister() be used across the network?

I thought about writing small clients that are installed on the
computers to be observed and use SHChangeNotifyRegister()
to listen to changes on the particular system. The clients could
then send a notification to the computer with the server program.
What is a good way to send information like a list of file names
to a program on another computer?

I haven't worked with WMI too much but would that be an option?
(Assuming that the program that observes the other machines
(including Win98) runs Win2000)

thanks for any ideas,
Nick
